On the SE Messinia, at the first leg of the Peloponnese peninsula, there is a beautiful little town the colourful Koroni. One of the finest examples of the Venetian fortress architecture and amongst the few of each kind to encompass houses and churches, the castle of Koroni dominates Akritas cape, on the southern edge of the Messinian Gulf. It was built by the Venetians in the 13th century and revamped by the Ottomans in the 16th. We cruise nearby and around the castle at the turquise waters. Zaga beach in the morning can be a really good head start of our day trip! Zaga Beach is one of the main attractions in Koroni with a view of the castle. It's a very, very long beach with plenty of soft sand. Water is clear, warm. You cannot resist a quick jump into the water!
Venetiko is an uninhabited island which belongs to the cluster of the Messenian Oinousses, south of the Akritas cape. Its name is recent and it might be linked to the period of the Venetian Rule, because the Roman traveller Pausanias called it Thiganousa. It is an island with bushes and abounds with vestiges from the byzantine era. There are ruins of a tower, a well and a late Byzantine era edifice located on the coast. It is thought that this building was used either for the production of salt or for the signaling of ships. On the north tip of the island there is an expanse of ground that may have been a salt-pan. So, the early inhabitants of the island lived from the production of salt. We anchor at the tranquil waters of a secluded bay. We enjoy the peaceful and gentle waters.
The one and only island at the shape of a heart! This island belongs to the Messinian Oinousses complex islands. It is one of the most amazing heart-shaped islands in the world. Called by locals as “Kardia”, due to its heart-shaped silhouette, the small rocky island is a skerry of the Sapientza Island, in the Messinian Golf. This special Greek heart-shaped island is a very famous attraction among the photo albums of the world.
Opposite to Methoni in Peloponnese is located the island of Sapientza. Sapientza considered to be one of the most beautiful islands of Messinia as it combines wild vegetation with amazing beaches. In the south side of the island exists a historical lighthouse built totally from stones in 1885. The lighthouse was built there to help the passing ships as the area was really dangerous and there have been a lot of shipwrecks. The name Sapientza is Italian and it means “wisdom”. The name of the island was preparing captains who approach it with their ships to be really careful because the waters there were very dangerous. This was a navy passage since the ancient times and the navy road connecting Italy to the Middle East. Since ancient times and during the times of Byzantine era and Turkish domination the island was an anchorage for fleets. We anchor at the bay of "kokkina" we swim and we are having our local delicacies!
Built by the Venetians in the early 13th century on a rocky promontory, the castle of Methoni is among the largest ones in the Mediterranean. You’ll be astonished at the bridge stone of 14 arches which connects the castle to the shore instead of the timber one that used to stand in its place before the Venetians ever got there. The celebrated symbol of Venice, the lion of St Marc, dominates the gate of the castle where immured reliefs, emblems, blazons, inscriptions, the huge gates –especially the main gate, above the moat – and the relics of two Ottoman bathhouses have survived. At the south edge of the castle a fortified islet floats. Bourtzi, as it is called, a prison and place of executions during the Turkish Occupation, was built in 1500 and is connected to the Sea Gate of the castle with a paved tiny road.
This is another amazing attraction that we closely pass by. The layered, pleated and faulted flysch protrudes tens of meters above the sea here. This not so resistant rock is continuously eaten away by the sea. Pieces regularly sink into the sea. So better to hurry up and visit this highlight
Foinikounda is a small picturesque village in Messinia region, evolved in one of the most beautiful summer vacation spots of South Peloponnese.
Wonderful pebble beach - chilly crystal clear waters and majestic wild beauty, along with some rocks to climb and discover on the sides. Ideal for people who enjoy privacy as it’s hard to reach by car so most probably we are enjoying our privacy.
The beach of Agia Triada, also known as Lachanou, is located east of the homonymous village (3.5 kilometres from Koroni). It is a sandy beach of unique beauty, far from the crowds. It is not organised. The northernmost side of the coast starts from a craggy steep hill, which joins the sea, offering natural shade for a few hours. The church of Agia Triada is also located near the beach.
