They were built during the communist regime following the systematization plans of Nicolae Ceaușescu. Following the renovation, the fountains in the center of Bucharest became the first in Europe to benefit from state-of-the-art equipment. The restoration of the centerpiece of the square includes a new mosaic designed as a reinterpretation of the Great Union theme. The Fountains have been recognized, approved and published as the World's Longest String of Synchronized Choreographic Fountains by the Academy of World Records.
