The Corinth Canal is one of Greece's most impressive engineering marvels, linking the Aegean Sea with the Ionian Sea and cutting through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth. This artificial waterway, which stretches for about 6.3 kilometers (3.9 miles), dramatically shortens the sea route between the Peloponnese and mainland Greece, saving ships from having to navigate around the southern tip of the Peloponnese. The idea of creating a canal dates back to ancient times, with the first attempts by the Corinthians during the 7th century BCE. However, it wasn't until the late 19th century, in 1893, that the canal was finally completed under the guidance of French engineers. The canal is 82 feet (25 meters) wide at its narrowest point, and 26 feet (8 meters) deep, allowing smaller ships to pass through, although larger vessels are unable to use it due to its dimensions.
