The Church of Saint George, also known as the Map Church, is a Greek Orthodox church located in the center of Madaba in Jordan. It is considered one of the most important and oldest churches in the city, established in 1896. The church was built on the remains of a Byzantine church dating back to the mid-sixth century. Inside, the church houses a geographical-biblical document represented by a mosaic map of the Holy Land, covering areas of Jordan, Palestine, the Nile Delta, and Phoenicia (Lebanon). It depicts about 150 sites in the region, especially along both banks of the Jordan River. The map extends across part of the church floor and measures approximately 15.75 meters.
Then climb up to Mount Nebo, a sacred Mountain in Jordan, standing at approximately 817 meters above sea level. Mount Nebo is steeped in religious significance as it presents an important Judeo-Christian pilgrimage site. It is where Moses first viewed the Promised Land from the summit and where Prophet Moses is said to have died. Moreover, Egyptian monks built a small monastery on the summit in memory of Moses In the fourth century, this church was then reconstructed into a basilica. This basilica, which still stands on Mount Nebo today, boasts a collection of well-preserved Byzantine mosaics. The mosaics illustrate images of wildlife and hunting. This site is not only a point of interest for history enthusiasts, however, offers a panoramic view of the Holy Land and the Jordan River Valley from the summit.
Though it is not directly in the Dead Sea, this lake has become an increasingly popular destination for travellers due to its unusual and captivating colour, which ranges from a deep pink to a light lavender hue depending on the time of day and seasonal conditions. The Pink Lake’s distinctive colour comes from the presence of certain types of microorganisms, particularly Dunaliella salina, a type of algae. These algae thrive in the high salt concentration of the lake, which is similar to the environment of the Dead Sea. Dunaliella salina produces a pigment known as beta-carotene, which gives the water its reddish-pink tone. This pigment also provides the lake with a rich, vibrant appearance, particularly during the warm summer months when the algae bloom in abundance.
The Dead Sea is a unique natural wonder located at the lowest point on Earth, known for its extremely salty water that allows visitors to float effortlessly while soaking in healthy minerals. Travelers love relaxing on warm beaches, trying therapeutic mud treatments, and enjoying breathtaking desert landscapes. With its peaceful atmosphere and natural spas, the Dead Sea offers a relaxing and unforgettable experience.
