Mountain, wildlife and lake in one week, with your own vehicle and a Malawian driver-guide who grew up here. Climb onto the Mulanje Massif, the highest mountain in south-central Africa, with a local mountain guide and spend a night in a hut on the high plateau. Then head north to Liwonde National Park for game drives and a Shire River boat safari among elephant herds, hippos and crocodiles, and finish with snorkelling, island boat trips and sunsets at Cape Maclear on Lake Malawi, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tour is fully private, so the pace is yours. Lodges, all meals, park fees and airport or hotel transfers are included. Run by Anake Tours, a Malawian-owned company rated 4.9 on Tripadvisor.
We meet you in the arrivals hall at Kamuzu International (Lilongwe) or Chileka (Blantyre) with a sign showing your name. If you are staying at a hotel in Lilongwe or Blantyre, tell us its name when booking and we can collect you there instead. Please send your flight details so we can track any delays.
Arrive in Blantyre and transfer about two hours to the foot of the Mulanje Massif, the highest mountain in south-central Africa. Spend the evening at your lodge with the granite peaks rising above you.
After an early breakfast at 6:30, set off at 7:00 with a local mountain guide, climbing through forest, streams and waterfalls onto the high Mulanje plateau, with sweeping views across the tea country below. Spend the night in a mountain hut on the plateau.
Walk down from the plateau past streams and viewpoints, then through the tea estates at the foot of the massif, before the transfer north towards Liwonde National Park.
A full day in Liwonde National Park on the Shire River, with morning and afternoon game drives in search of elephant, sable antelope, kudu, buffalo and, with luck, black rhino, plus rich birdlife along the floodplain.
Glide along the Shire River on a morning boat safari, close to pods of hippo, basking crocodiles and elephant herds wading through the reeds. After lunch, transfer to Cape Maclear on the shores of Lake Malawi.
A full day on Lake Malawi inside the UNESCO-listed national park: snorkel among hundreds of colourful cichlid fish found nowhere else on earth, boat out to the islands to watch African fish eagles dive, and cruise back into the bay at sunset.
Enjoy a relaxed final morning on the beach at Cape Maclear, then transfer back to Blantyre for your onward journey.
