We arrive at Chania International Airport or Heraklion Airport and drive across the island towards Spili. The journey offers a gentle introduction to Crete with olive groves, cypress trees, and wide open landscapes unfolding along the route. After settling in, we enjoy a relaxed walk through the surrounding countryside where spring already reveals its richness. Fields become covered with Anemone coronaria in vivid reds and blues, while Oxalis pes-caprae creates endless carpets of yellow. The first orchids may already appear, including Anacamptis pyramidalis, Orchis italica, and Himantoglossum robertianum.
Explore the spectacular Lefka Ori (White Mountains) and the Omalos Plateau, surrounded by rugged peaks and breathtaking mountain scenery. Discover Crete’s spring flora during nature walks, with opportunities to spot beautiful wildflowers such as Crocus sieberi, Scilla nana, Tulipa bakeri and Anemone coronaria. Look out for seasonal orchids and other native plants that make this region a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photography lovers. Keep your eyes on the sky for griffon vultures and, with luck, golden eagles or the rare bearded vulture. The day also includes spectacular viewpoints overlooking the legendary Samaria Gorge, where towering limestone cliffs reveal the wild beauty of western Crete.
Today we head south to hike the atmospheric Imbros Gorge, an easy yet spectacular 8 kilometre descent through towering limestone walls and sheltered canyon landscapes. The cooler environment allows specialised plants to thrive among rock faces and crevices, including Campanula laciniata, Petromarula pinnata, Staehelina petiolata, and the endemic Origanum dictamnus. Along the path we also encounter Cistus creticus, Salvia fruticosa, Phlomis lanata, and Ballota pseudodictamnus.
Later, we continue to the dramatic Aradena Gorge, where the scale becomes even more impressive. Here we continue botanizing among cliffs and rocky slopes, discovering Silene sedoides, Lomelosia cretica, and orchids such as Ophrys cretica and Serapias bergonii. The contrast between enclosed canyon landscapes and vast open cliffs creates a day filled with movement, texture, and variety.
After breakfast, we drive south towards the striking Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where steep cliffs create one of the most dramatic natural settings in Crete. Plants such as Inula candida and Capparis spinosa cling to the vertical rock faces, thriving in seemingly impossible conditions. We continue to the historic Preveli Monastery before descending into the extraordinary Preveli Palm Forest, where the endemic Phoenix theophrasti grows along the riverbanks, creating an unexpectedly lush and tropical atmosphere. Later we reach Triopetra Beach, where coastal species including Lotus creticus, Eryngium maritimum, and Pancratium maritimum appear among sand dunes and rocky shores. There is time here to slow down, relax, and enjoy the openness and silence of the Libyan Sea.
Today we explore the famous Gious Kambos Plateau, one of the most important botanical landscapes in all of Crete. In spring, the plateau transforms into a breathtaking mosaic filled with orchids, tulips, and flowering plants in extraordinary diversity. Among the orchids we encounter species such as Ophrys cretica, Ophrys heldreichii, Ophrys tenthredinifera, Ophrys fusca, Ophrys episcopalis, Ophrys bombyliflora, Ophrys lutea, and Ophrys iricolor. Alongside them grow Anacamptis boryi, Anacamptis laxiflora, Anacamptis quadripunctata, Anacamptis collina, Orchis italica, Orchis anthropophora, and Orchis pauciflora. The plateau is equally rich in spring flowers including Tulipa doerfleri, Tulipa saxatilis, Fritillaria messanensis, Iris tuberosa, Gladiolus italicus, Arum creticum, and Arisarum vulgare. Depending on rainfall and seasonal conditions, the landscape changes dramatically from year to year, making every visit unique and impossible to fully predict.
Today we head into the wild landscapes of the Psiloritis Mountains, climbing towards the higher slopes of Mount Ida. The scenery becomes more rugged, isolated, and expansive, with wide mountain views stretching in every direction. Here we discover high altitude species including Tulipa cretica, abundant Crocus sieberi, Cyclamen creticum, and Scilla nana. We also encounter Arum creticum, Arum idaeum, Iris unguicularis subsp. cretica, while alpine cushions of Acantholimon androsaceum appear among the rocky slopes. This is a quieter and deeply rewarding day where the beauty lies in detail, silence, and the remarkable resilience of Crete’s mountain flora.
After breakfast, we begin the journey back across the island for departure. The final drive offers time to reflect on a week filled with extraordinary landscapes, rare flowers, mountain gorges, birds, colours, and the unforgettable experience of discovering Crete in spring.
