Time: Morning Attraction: Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning Buddha statues and frescoes. The temple complex is located in a cave on a hill and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. Duration: 02 hours.
Time: Afternoon Embark on an exciting jeep safari in Minneriya National Park. This is one of the best places to see elephants, especially during the dry season when they gather around the Minneriya tank. What to see: Elephants, various bird species, and other wildlife.
Time: Early morning (around 6:30 AM to avoid the heat) Attraction: Climb to the top of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the ancient royal palace, the beautiful frescoes, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Duration: 2-3 hours.
Polonnaruwa Ancient City Time: Late morning Attraction: Visit Polonnaruwa, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the well-preserved ruins of the ancient city, including the Royal Palace, Gal Vihara rock temple, and Parakrama Samudra (a vast man-made reservoir). Duration: 3-4 hours.
Sri Muththumari Amman Hindu Temple Time: Late morning (on the way to Kandy) Attraction: Stop by this colorful and vibrant Hindu temple in Matale, dedicated to Goddess Mariamman. It is known for its beautiful architecture and sacred significance. Duration: 30 minutes to 1 hour.
The small but exceptionally well-preserved Nalanda Gedige temple from around 700 to 1000 AD is of particular cultural and historical appeal for many reasons. Firstly, it is the oldest building in Sri Lanka, which was built entirely from natural stone, i.e. without brick fillings. Secondly, it forms a combination of Buddhist and Hindu and Sinhalese and Tamil elements stylistically, although hardly any other Buddhist building in Sri Lanka shows such a clear similarity to classic South Indian temple architecture.
The hill called Bahirawakanda, 100 m above Kandy town, is easily recognizable by the huge seated Buddha statue overlooking Kandy from the very top of it. Bahirawakanda is also the name of the respective village, the western suburb next to Kandy city.
Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) Time: Afternoon Attraction: Visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the most important Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. Here you’ll find the tooth relic of the Buddha. Duration: 2 hours.
