Hallstatt is a small UNESCO-listed village on Hallstätter See, set below the Dachstein Alps and known for its salt-mining heritage. It lies about a roughly 3.5-hour drive from Vienna. The compact center has narrow lanes, timber houses with flowered balconies, and a lakeside promenade with views of the Evangelical church spire reflected in the water. The Market Square features painted façades and cafés; the Mühlbach stream and waterfall run through the village. Above town, the Hallstatt Skywalk viewpoint offers wide lake and mountain panoramas. St. Michael’s Chapel and its historic bone house (Beinhaus) reflect a local memorial tradition. Along the shore you’ll find boat landings and quiet viewpoints; in the upper lanes, small workshops sell regional crafts and salt-themed souvenirs. Hallstatt is about scenery and atmosphere—lake light, steep forested slopes, and a centuries-old story shaped by “white gold.”

2Salzburg
Salzburg is a compact Baroque city on the Salzach River, framed by the hills of Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg and crowned by Hohensalzburg Fortress.
