    Yu Garden (Yuyuan)

Yu Garden, is a classical garden with a history of over 450 years and is known as the jewel of Jiangnan gardens. Yu Garden was originally built during the Jiajing and Wanli years of the Ming Dynasty, more than 450 years ago. The garden was initially the private garden of the Ming Dynasty official Pan Yunduan, and its name means "to delight one's parents and provide for their well-being in their old age," hence the name "Yu Garden". The garden is exquisitely designed and tranquil, featuring pavilions, towers, rockeries, ponds, and more. It is a rare elegant retreat amidst the bustling city. The garden also displays hundreds of plaques and inscriptions by famous artists, as well as a rich collection of stone sculptures. Yu Garden is not only one of the five classical gardens in Shanghai but also the only well-preserved Jiangnan classical garden in the urban area.
