The tour usually starts with a visit to this impressive Roman ruin. You'll see one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in North Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and an immense structure that once hosted gladiator contests.
You'll travel to the "lunar" landscape of Matmata. The main attraction here is visiting the Troglodyte (Underground) Houses, traditional Berber homes dug into the earth to escape the heat. You'll typically get to step inside one of these unique dwellings.
The day concludes by reaching Douz. This town is often referred to as the "Gateway to the Sahara." Optional Sahara Activities: Upon arrival, travelers usually have the option (at an extra cost) to take a camel ride or a quad bike excursion into the nearby sand dunes to experience the Saharan sunset.
An early start often involves crossing this enormous salt flat, the largest in North Africa. The vast white or pink expanse (depending on the time and weather) offers incredible photo opportunities, and travelers sometimes stop to see the mirage phenomenon.
Tozeur Oasis and Medina: You may have a chance to visit the old medina, famous for its unique brick architecture, and take a tour of the lush palm groves, sometimes via an optional horse-drawn carriage ride.
This is a major highlight. You will typically switch to a 4x4 vehicle for an exciting drive into the desert. Ong Jmal (Camel's Neck): A photo stop at the distinctive rock formation, which is Arabic for "Camel's Neck." Mos Espa Film Set: You will visit the iconic, purpose-built film set for the city of Mos Espa on the planet Tatooine, used in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Episode II – Attack of the Clones.
Some tours will include a visit to the nearby mountain oases like Chebika and Tamerza, which feature stunning canyons and waterfalls, before heading back north.
