Stop outside the Temple of Olympian Zeus, one of the most impressive reminders of ancient Athens. From the outside, admire the enormous surviving columns and hear the story of the temple, its ambitious construction and its connection to the Roman period of the city. Your local guide will bring the ruins to life with stories and context, explaining how this monumental site fits into the Athens you see today. There is no entrance to the archaeological site during the tour, but you’ll have time to take photos and appreciate the scale of the monument from outside before continuing through the historic center.
Step into Plaka, one of Athens’ most atmospheric neighborhoods, where narrow streets, neoclassical houses, small shops and lively local spots create a very different feel from the city’s main avenues. As you walk through the neighborhood, your local guide will share stories about how Plaka has changed over the years, from its traditional character to the lively area visitors experience today. Discover some of its lesser-known corners, hear stories connected to the people who lived here, and learn how ancient and modern Athens overlap throughout the neighborhood.
