Founded in the 12th century by the hermit Neophytos the Recluse, this remarkable monastery began as a simple cave carved into the rock, known as the Enkleistra. Seeking solitude, Neophytos lived here in prayer and study, later becoming an important writer who documented life in Byzantine Cyprus. The cave is decorated with impressive frescoes dating from the 12th and 15th centuries, many of which are still preserved today. A visit offers a peaceful and unique experience. Guests can step inside the Enkleistra to see the saint’s original living space, chapel, and tomb. The monastery also features a quiet courtyard, a traditional church, and beautiful views over the surrounding valley. The calm atmosphere makes it a perfect, relaxing stop that combines history, culture, and natural beauty.
