Your adventure to the Westman Islands will begin from your chosen departure point in Reykjavik. Once all aboard. we'll begin the 2 hour journey to Landeyjahöfn Ferry terminal. There, we'll board the Herjólfur ferry for a scenic 30-minute voyage to Vestmannaeyjar island.
Upon arrival, the tour will begin with a stop to marvel at the breath-taking views of Elephant Rock (Halldórsskora). This stunning formation is crafted from basalt rock, molded during a volcanic outburst from Eldfell. Its distinctive silhouette, resembling an elephant's head with its trunk gracefully dipping into the water, makes it an unmistakable landmark.
Next we'll visit Stórhöfði cape for an enchanting session of puffin watching, providing plenty of opportunities to capture delightful photos of these charismatic birds.
Following our puffin-watching adventure, our next destination is the Eldheimar Museum, affectionately dubbed the 'Pompeii of the North.' Here, you'll delve into the events surrounding the volcanic eruption of 1973 and its profound impact on the region. Following this insightful visit, we'll make our way downtown for a lunch break (lunch expenses are not covered in the tour price).
Following lunch, our itinerary leads us to Skansinn, situated adjacent to the harbor area and named after the fortress that once occupied this space. Here, you'll encounter Stafkirkjan, a striking Norse "Viking" Wood Church, alongside a lighthouse offering breathtaking views of the cliffs below.
After our exploration of Skansinn, our adventure continues with a hike up Mt. Eldfell Volcano, whose last eruption occurred in 1973. Upon reaching the summit, you'll be treated to a magnificent panorama of the surrounding lava fields, the town, and the entire island spread out below.
Following the hike, you'll have the opportunity to leisurely wander around the town at your own pace or opt to explore the fascinating lava fields as you make your way back to the harbor. We'll reconvene at the harbor in the late afternoon to board the ferry back to the mainland, ensuring a timely return to Reykjavik by evening.
