Built at an altitude of 289 m on the northern slope of the Djebel Zaghouan , the Temple of Waters is the nymphaeum of a spring (Aïn). This, with Aïn Ayed nearby, Aïn Djour and Aïn Ziga downstream [ 2 ] , fed the aqueduct built in the 2nd century to supply water to the city of Carthage , located 90 kilometers away with a studied gradient of 0.29 % . The aqueduct was built by the Emperor Hadrian [ 3 ] , [ 4 ] , who reigned over the Roman Empire from 117 until his death in 138. From the 13th century , it supplied the city of Tunis . The remains of what could be the original nymphaeum (a small , much more modest basilica -type temple ) were discovered nearby in 2001, while the large temple dates from the Severine period .
