It was founded in 1979 by Jock Leslie Melville and his wife Betty, who started a breeding program by capturing two baby giraffes on their property. The center aims to conserve the species through breeding and reintroduction efforts into Kenyan national parks and conservancies. In addition to giraffe conservation, the center serves as an environmental education hub, especially for Kenyan school children, teaching them about wildlife and environmental stewardship. Visitors can feed giraffes from an observation platform and explore a nature trail sanctuary with various bird species and smaller animals. The center also raises awareness and funds through visitor activities, donations, and a gift shop, supporting broader conservation initiatives.
