The Citadel & The Alabaster Mosque ocated within the Cairo Citadel in Islamic Cairo. Beginning here allows you to enjoy the panoramic views of Cairo before the heat of the day and the crowds peak. Marvel at the Ottoman-style architecture, the massive central dome, and the slender minarets. The extensive use of alabaster gives the interior a soft, glowing light. Don't miss the clock in the courtyard, a gift from France in exchange for the Luxor Obelisk in Paris.

2Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan
The Sultan and His Neighbor A short drive takes you to the next two sites, which stand opposite each other in a dramatic square below the Citadel. Sultan Hasan Mosque & Madrassa: Explore this colossal Mamluk-era masterpiece. It is renowned for its monumental scale, innovative architecture, and the sublime harmony of its interior spaces. Its massive portal and soaring courtyard are among the finest in Islamic architecture. Al-Rifa'i Mosque: Directly facing the Sultan Hasan Mosque, the Al-Rifa'i Mosque provides a fascinating contrast. Built in the 19th century, it looks ancient but is a modern construction. It serves as the royal mausoleum, containing the tombs of the last Shah of Iran, King Farouk of Egypt, and other Egyptian royals.

A Walk Through History From the mosques, take a short drive or a 15-20 minute walk to the entrance of Al-Moeiz Street (Shari'a Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah), the main thoroughfare of Fatimid Cairo.
