This 1.5-mile journey may be easy, with boardwalks and paved trails, but it’s designed to fully immerse you in the awe-inspiring world of an active volcano.

We begin at the steaming Sulfur Banks, where the landscape feels like a portal to Earth’s prehistoric past. From there, we follow the Crater Rim Trail, pausing at dramatic viewpoints overlooking Kīlauea’s summit caldera crater. Along the way, you’ll uncover the fascinating stories of Kīlauea’s geology and its deep connection to Hawaiian culture.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there—we’ll zoom out to explore the formation of the entire Hawaiian Island chain, and dive into the epic voyages of the Polynesian explorers who first settled these islands. It’s not just a hike—it’s a journey through time, nature, and legend.

Meeting and pickup

Meeting point

Arrive at the Visitor Center parking lot about 15 minutes before your 1:00 PM start time. To get there, once you come through the entrance gate, you will proceed through a roundabout onto Crater Rim Drive - West and make the first right turn into the parking lot where your guide will meet you.

What to expect

A 1.5-mile, mostly paved hike suitable for a wide range of abilities--including wheelchair accessible. Visit steaming sulfur banks, walk the Crater Rim Trail, and take in breathtaking viewpoints of the summit caldera. All this, while learning about the geology, ecology, and history of the volcano. Note: If you have a member of your group who uses a wheelchair, please call or write ahead of time so we can make the necessary arrangements.
