The meeting point will be located by the bust of Simón Bolívar. I'll be waiting for you with a grey backpack.
After Learning some important facts about Pueblo Libre at the main square, on your way to the market, you’ll pass by the Calvary Legion and one of the local army bases. This area has a deep military tradition that dates back to the battles for independence.
Now, you step into the Pueblo Libre Market. For us locals, the market isn’t just a place to buy groceries; it’s a social ritual. Notice how people interact with their favourite vendors, or caseros. It’s not a quick transaction; instead, it involves catching up on family and neighbourhood news. The market serves as the community's living room, and the energy here is contagious. Next, you will begin your fruit tasting with a vendor who sources locally produced fruits and vegetables, offering a wide variety of options.
Just a short walk away is a true Lima institution: the Antigua Taberna Santiago Queirolo. Founded in 1880, this tavern is legendary. Stepping inside, with its high wooden shelves and marble tables, feels like travelling back to the 19th century. It’s the birthplace of one of Peru’s most famous Pisco brands and the perfect place to soak in the local atmosphere.
Your next stop is the Santa María Magdalena Church. Founded in 1557, this is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Lima. While its pink facade is striking, the real wonder is the gold-leaf Baroque altars inside. It’s a peaceful moment of reflection on our tour and a testament to the deep religious roots of the district.
Not far from Plaza Bolivar is Casa Orbea, one of the best-preserved colonial houses in Pueblo Libre. This 18th-century mansion is a classic example of Spanish colonial architecture and was the residence of influential families during the colonial era. The house is not always open to the public, but it’s worth passing by to admire its grand design, especially the beautiful wooden balconies and the ornate doorways.
Before your final stop, you’ll stroll through the Boulevard del Criollismo. This pedestrian walkway is a tribute to Musica Criolla—the soulful, guitar-driven music of the Peruvian coast. You’ll talk about the legendary musicians who are honoured here and how their rhythm still defines the spirit of Lima.
To conclude your day, you return to the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology, and History of Peru. After exploring the streets and meeting the locals, you are eager to see the artifacts. This museum features an impressive collection, ranging from ancient stone monoliths of the Chavin culture to the exquisite royal textiles of the Incas. It tells the definitive story of Peru, all within the historic building that once housed the liberators San Martin and Bolivar.
