Your private air-conditioned vehicle arrives at your hotel at 7:00 AM. Your guide introduces themselves and confirms the day's plan. The drive to Fayoum takes approximately 90 minutes on the desert highway. Your guide is happy to answer questions or share background on the region as the city gives way to open desert.
Your first stop is the most surprising. Inside Wadi El Rayan Protected Area, a series of five waterfalls, the largest in Egypt , cascade through a desert canyon into a chain of turquoise lakes. The waterfalls formed when agricultural drainage from the Fayoum lowlands began filling the lower desert basins over the past century. Morning light here is exceptional for photography, and your guide knows the best vantage points.
Your group transfers to a private 4×4 desert vehicle and heads into the open Fayoum desert. Your driver climbs steep dune faces, crosses ridgelines, and descends into sand valleys at angles that make everyone simultaneously laugh and hold on tight. Adventurous, exhilarating, and completely safe. At the highest peaks you stop to take in panoramic views of the valley and desert lakes below.
Boards are provided, your guide demonstrates technique, and then it is your turn. Most guests are sliding confidently within two or three attempts. Your guide stays with you throughout and will happily photograph your runs from start to finish.
Hidden in a natural hollow between two dune ridges, the Magic Lake is invisible from the desert floor until you crest the final rise. The mineral-rich water is clear with a distinctive shimmer in afternoon light. Wade in to cool off, float, or simply sit at the edge and absorb the fact that there is a lake in the middle of the Sahara.
