Meet your guide at Exit 2 of Nanjing East Road Station. From here, begin with a short cultural walk around Nanjing East Road, the Peace Hotel area. Begin the tour at one of Shanghai's most famous historic landmarks. The Peace Hotel is more than a beautiful Art Deco building; it is a symbol of Shanghai's international past, when the city became a meeting point for Chinese merchants, foreign banks, jazz culture, luxury hotels, and global trade. Your guide will introduce the story behind Nanjing East Road, the old commercial heart of Shanghai, and explain why this area became the city's first global stage. This stop gives you the historical background before the food tastings begin, helping you understand how Shanghai's local cuisine was shaped by trade, migration, family life, and East-meets-West culture.

    The Bund

Walk to The Bund, Shanghai's most iconic waterfront and the city's classic postcard view. From here, you will see the contrast between the historic architecture along the Huangpu River and the modern skyline of Pudong across the water. Your guide will explain why The Bund became the financial and commercial center of old Shanghai, how the city grew from a port into an international metropolis, and why this riverfront still represents Shanghai's ambition, wealth, and global identity. This stop connects the grand public face of Shanghai with the local food culture you will experience later in the neighborhood streets.

Continue to the former British Consulate area, one of the most important historical sites in the Bund district. This area reflects the period when Shanghai became an international treaty-port city and developed a unique urban culture influenced by both Chinese and foreign communities. Your guide will explain the historical role of the consulate area in simple, traveler-friendly language: how foreign trade, river transport, banking, hotels, and local neighborhoods grew side by side. This is also where the tour begins to shift from Shanghai's official history to the everyday life of the people who lived, worked, cooked, and ate around these streets.

Explore the Rockbund and Waitanyuan area, a quieter historic district behind The Bund known for restored heritage buildings, old streets, galleries, cafes, and cultural spaces. Compared with the busy riverfront, this area shows a more layered and intimate side of old Shanghai. Your guide will point out the architectural details and explain how Shanghai preserved parts of its early modern history while turning old buildings into new cultural spaces. This stop works as a bridge between the landmark section and the local food section: from Shanghai's grand international image to the smaller streets where local residents still live and eat.

Leave the landmark district and enter Ningbo Road, a local neighborhood area close to Nanjing East Road but very different in atmosphere. Here, the tour moves away from tourist Shanghai and into everyday Shanghai: small food shops, neighborhood vendors, local snacks, and the daily rhythm of residents buying, eating, and chatting. This is the main food-tasting section of the tour. Depending on the day, you may taste Shanghai favorites such as xiaolongbao, pan-fried dumplings, Shanghai-style braised pork, white-cut chicken, scallion oil noodles, pork chop with rice cake, freshly baked pork mooncakes, sticky rice cakes, scallion pancakes, or other local snacks. Your guide will explain how local people actually eat these foods, when they eat them, and why they matter in Shanghai family life. You may also visit a neighborhood market or local food area, where your guide can translate simple interactions with vendors and show how Shanghai residents choose ingredients and snacks.
