As you cruise out of the Bay of Cartagena, the city's modern skyline of Bocagrande fades behind you. To your right, the rugged coastline of Tierra Bomba Island stays in view for the first leg of the trip. The highlight of the exit is passing through the Bocachica Channel. On your right, you’ll see the Fort of San Fernando de Bocachica, a stunning 18th-century horseshoe-shaped stone fortress that once defended the city from pirates and invaders. Opposite it sits the Fort of San José, and together they create a dramatic "gateway" as the water transitions from the bay’s emerald green to the deep, sparkling blue of the open Caribbean Sea.
Heading southwest, you will see the coastline of Barú beginning to appear on your left. The crossing takes you into the heart of the Rosario Islands National Park, an archipelago of 27 coral islands. Island Hopping & Snorkeling: You’ll navigate through internal channels surrounded by mangroves and turquoise lagoons. This is the prime time for snorkeling at sites like Bajo de las Almas or the sunken plane near Isla Grande, where the coral reefs are teeming with tropical fish. Secluded Vibes: You can cruise past private estates and eco-hotels built directly on the water, seeing the distinct contrast between the rocky coral shores and the white sand pockets.
For a high-quality, authentic experience, a stop at a reputable location we will recommend some options on Isla Grande is recommended. Here, you can enjoy a traditional Caribbean lunch—freshly caught snapper or lobster, coconut rice, and patacones—with your feet in the sand and away from the high-density crowds. This is optional if you wish to stop here as you can bring your on drinks and food, if you wish to have lunch at the recommend options you will pay them directly, credit cards accepted.
Cholón: Known as the "Party Island," this is a unique sandbar where boats congregate. You’ll see thatched-roof huts standing in waist-deep water where travelers enjoy drinks and music right in the sea. It is the most social and high-energy spot in the archipelago. Playa Blanca: As you begin the return leg, you’ll cruise past the famous Playa Blanca. From the water, you can see its long stretch of brilliant white sand and vibrant beach clubs before the area starts to quiet down for the afternoon.
The final stretch is a scenic cruise back toward the city. As you re-enter the Bay of Cartagena, the afternoon light hits the colonial walls of the Old City and the skyscrapers, providing a perfect backdrop for photos. You’ll be back at the docks by 4:30 PM, just as the sun begins its early descent, capping off a full day of exploration.
