At the heart of the capital city of Gozo lies another majestic site: the mediaeval fortress known locally as “Iċ-Ċittadella” (The Citadel). With its distinctive skyline and imposing military architecture, this ancient, fortified structure stands out as Gozo’s major landmark, a beacon visible from all over the island. The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the site now occupied by The Citadel is believed to have been the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos, or Glauconis Civitas. During the mediaeval period, the acropolis was converted into a castle, which served as a refuge for Gozo’s population. A suburb began to develop outside its walls by the 15th century, and this area now forms the historic core of Victoria.

The megalithic temples of Gantija have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. Along with the Ta’ Ħaġrat Temples and Skorba Temples in Malta, this remarkable archaeological site dates to around 3600–2500 BC. The Ġgantija temples are thought to be the second oldest free-standing structures in the world, second only to Göbekli Tepe in Turkey and predating Stonehenge in England and the Pyramids of Egypt by about 1000 years! The name “Ġgantija” is derived from the Maltese word for giant (“Ġgant”) because it was believed that the site was constructed by a race of giants. This mythical concept is understandable considering that the temples are made of massive limestone blocks measuring over five metres in length and weighing more than 50 tonnes. The entrance fee to the temples of Ġgantija is not included in the price of your package; if you wish to visit the temples, you will have some free time to do so.

Heading west on the outskirts of the village of Għarb, we stop at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu, commonly referred to as “Il-Knisja tal-Mirakli” (The Miracle Church) or simply as “Ta’ Pinu.". This spectacular basilica is one of Gozo’s most iconic landmarks. Though the building, its interior, and its surroundings are truly beautiful, it is the stories surrounding the church that are the most fascinating. Within the shrine, you will find walls covered in letters, crutches, damaged helmets, etc. that were offered as testimony by people who believed to have been blessed with a miracle by the grace of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Ta’ Pinu.

    Xwejni Salt Pans

Heading north, we will enjoy a scenic route through the countryside that will take us to the Xwejni Salt Pans along the northern coast of the island. The salt pans are a transfixing landmark of vital importance, upholding an ancient trade and skill while harvesting one of Gozo’s important natural raw materials. Xwejni’s salt pans chequerboard pattern and shimmering mirrored reflective pools are always a dynamic sight to behold. Spanning several kilometres across Gozo’s northern coast, today they are divided between 3 salt farmers. Salt mining has been a tradition in Malta for centuries, and here you will find large clusters of salt pans. Hewn in the rocky coastline, these pans collect sea water during the colder and windier months of the year. While the water evaporates in the heat of the sun, the salt remains in these pans and is harvested by hand. The harvesting season stretches from April to August, with people hard at work twice weekly.
