Hinoki Village, located in the East District of Chiayi City, is Taiwan’s first forest-themed cultural and creative park. The village preserves 28 Japanese-style wooden buildings constructed during the Japanese colonial period, primarily using precious Alishan hinoki (cypress) wood. Originally, this area served as a residential zone for forestry employees and was known as “Hinokicho” at the time. These historical structures reflect Chiayi’s important role in Taiwan’s forestry industry. After careful restoration, the village reopened in 2014 as a vibrant cultural destination that blends history, creativity, and nature. With its strong japanese atmosphere and well-preserved architecture, Hinoki Village is often referred to as the “Little Kyoto of Taiwan.”
