- Elafonisi’s famous pink sand is a natural phenomenon created by tiny crushed seashells mixed with white sand. The pink colour is subtle and varies from day to day depending on light, weather, tides and the time of year. It is usually most visible in small patches near the waterline rather than across the entire beach. The sand appears at its pinkest in ideal lighting conditions, particularly on bright, sunny days.
