This is a 5-day trip with full focus on large wildlife. Watch moose, beavers, roe deer, red fox, red squirrel and birds. We will also spend a night out in tents in a wolf territory with the chance to hear wolves howl at night.
• Watch and photograph moose and beavers in the wild
• Track wolves and hear them howl at night
• Try canoeing and hike in pristine boreal forests
• Stay three nights at a small guesthouse overlooking a lake, plus one night in tents in wolf territory
• Local guides and small groups (max 7 persons) for a more genuine experience
We meet at Arlanda Visitor Center, an official information desk in Terminal 5 in the arrivals hall on the lower floor, next to cafe Ritazza. Our guide will arrive there at 3 pm, not earlier. Just wait there and look out for our WildSweden-sign. If you are on time, we will not leave without you. If we cannot find you we will try to call you. From there we take our minivan for the two hours drive to Skinnskatteberg.
- Note that if your flight is delayed, we will wait for maximum of half an hour, since we have other guests joining the tour. If you arrive more than 30 minutes late you need to take a taxi to Udden guesthouse at your own expense. This ride takes two hours and cost approximately 5000 SEK for one car, so that is pricey, but you may be able to get compensation from your travel insurance.
- Many guests choose to visit Stockholm before the tour begins. If you do, you still need to return to Arlanda airport to meet our guide.
At the end of the tour we will take you to Köping train station for a train to Stockholm Central Station, ticket included. From Stockholm you can easily continue on your own to Arlanda airport with a shuttle train or bus. Arrival in Stockholm C at around 6pm at the earliest.
Meet your guide at Stockholm Arlanda airport for the two hour transfer to Skinnskatteberg. You're greeted by the stunning setting of Udden guesthouse where Paulina and Janne will host us for a few days. Welcome dinner, introduction and night at the guesthouse.
After breakfast you meet up with your guide for a canoeing excursion on the lake. Our Canadian style canoes are stable and safe, and paddling is an ideal way to explore this lake and its islands. Keep an eye out for Black-throated diver, Osprey, Common tern, Grey heron and Common crane. Lunch on an island then we head back and you will have some free time to relax, take a swim or go for a hike. In the evening you meet up with your guide again. This time in search for moose! The surrounding forest has proven to be one of the best in Sweden for moose watching. We go for a walk and your guide shares the skills of tracking as we look for hoof prints, fresh droppings and bite marks. We light up a campfire and enjoy an evening meal together in a beautiful spot overlooking a small forest lake. We are out for about five hours, both hiking and driving. Seeing moose, relaxed in their native habitat, is always an awe-inspiring experience. We return to the guesthouse late at night.
Last night's adventure ended late, so you can take your time in the morning. On this day your guide will take you for a walk in a pristine forest. During summer the forest floor is literally covered in berries and later in the summer also mushrooms of all kinds. Lunch in the forest. When we return to the guesthouse enjoy some afternoon rest or hop in the lake for a wild swim. This evening we go on a beaver safari on a lake and river nearby. We move in small boats with silent electric motors in search for beavers and their lodges. We often see a variety of birds and sometimes other mammals on this excursion, and it's a lovely night on the water. We stay out for about five hours and we begin with an evening meal in a small barn. We keep going into the night and return to the guesthouse late at night.
Breakfast and lunch at the guesthouse. Feel free to explore the surroundings on your own. After lunch we head out to a nearby forest where a family of wolves keep their territory. Depending on the current situation with the wolves we may search for paw prints, droppings, killed prey and other tracks to give us clues that wolves are around. As darkness descends upon us, we move closer to the wolves to increase our chances of hearing them howl. Sometimes we walk up to an hour in rough terrain, often in the dark, in silence. Our aim is to reach a strategic location where we can settle down and spend a few hours to listen. Hearing wolves howl is one of the most exciting experiences you can have in nature! Although we cannot guarantee that this will happen, we do actually hear wolves howl on most of our tours. We always stay at a respectful distance as we don't want to disturb the wolves. After midnight we return to our camp and sleep well in our tents.
Wake up slowly in the forest. We pack up our tented camp and head back to civilisation for a well-deserved lunch at the guesthouse before we conclude the tour. Hopefully it's been five truly fascinating days together with your guide and fellow nature lovers, and it will surely be a little sad to say your goodbyes. You have the chance to have a shower before it's time to leave. We will take you to a train station for a bus or train to Stockholm. As you may be tired after a night in the forest we highly recommend staying an extra night at the guesthouse or even in Stockholm, for a chance to relax and sleep well before you travel. Note that if you decide to stay an extra night at Udden guesthouse, we will not be able to bring you back to Stockholm. But you can easily book your own train from Skinnskatteberg at www.sj.se. The taxi from Udden to the train station in Skinnskatteberg station will be on our behalf.
