Offered in: German and 2 more

For its fifteenth edition, Amsterdam once again becomes a stage for light art. Local, national and international artists each bring their own perspective on the city. With no fixed theme, a dialogue with Amsterdam unfolds through a multitude of perspectives.

Along the brand-new route through Amsterdam's central-east district, admire 20 unique light artworks near landmarks including the Magere Brug and the Amstelsluizen. Rediscover Amsterdam from the water and with an open mind.

As you cruise along the festival route, your live guide will share stories about the artworks, artists and ideas presented throughout the city. Live guiding is available in English and Dutch, making the experience personal and engaging as you sail through Amsterdam's canals.

German-speaking guests can use the official Amsterdam Light Festival audio tour to learn more about the artworks and the stories behind them.

The festival runs from Thursday, 26 November 2026 through Sunday, 17 January 2027.

Rituals have traditionally helped us through all kinds of transformations: from past to future, from winter to summer, from youth to adulthood. Rituals connect us to our community, our gods or our ancestors. They evolve over time, but largely remain the same, giving us a sense of security and stability in a chaotic world.

Light plays a crucial role in many forms of ritual, as a vibrant symbol of joy, energy and life. We use fireworks to ring in the new year, candles to commemorate the coming of a savior, and midsummer fires to welcome the solstice. Light adds something mystical and sacred to a ritual like no other element can. Artists were asked to represent and reflect on rituals that are meaningful to Amsterdam's diverse community. As a strong foundation that stands the test of time, rituals provide a sense of continuity and connection to our past, present and future selves. This edition aims to connect, move or inspire our audience with light art that reflects many aspects of rituals, such as rhythm, repetition, performativity, symbolism, continuity and memory.
