  Known as the foremost water town in China, Zhouzhuang is a place where history flows as gently as its winding canals. Its most legendary figure is Shen Wansan, the wealthiest merchant of the Ming Dynasty, whose fortune was so vast that it aroused the envy of the emperor himself—leading to his banishment to the frontier. Today, you can step into his former mansion, where tales of his riches still linger, and even try their luck by touching the famed "treasure bowl." One of the town's architectural marvels is a sprawling residential compound with a private pier tucked in its rear garden—a rare design that allowed boats to sail directly into the household. Above the waterways, fourteen ancient stone bridges span the centuries, with the celebrated Twin Bridges standing as the crown jewel, their unique geometry capturing the very essence of Jiangnan's timeless beauty.
