Juhor mountain - Most important information
Juhor mountain is between Velika Morava in the east, Levča in the west, Temnić in the south, and Belica in the north. Juhor Mountain belongs to the Rhodope Mountains, and the highest point of this mountain is Veliki Vetren peak. It covers the territory of several municipalities, and Paraćin is among them.
History of Juhor mountain
Research shows that Juhor Mountain was inhabited as early as the 8th century BC. The name of the Juhor mountain has a Slavic origin since the root of this word is the Proto-Slavic word juho, which means to report, that is to write.
- In 1997, a Celtic fort was discovered on Juhor Mountain: During excavations and research, archaeologists discovered a Celtic fort here. On that occasion, archaeologists found 140 items belonging to the Celts.
What to see/do at Juhor Mountain
Mountain Juhor is one of the most popular destinations in this part of Serbia, and it is adorned with many trails for walking and hiking, as well as many attractions that can be seen here. In addition, the Juhor mountain is highly mysterious, and many legends are associated with it.
- On Mount Juhor, you can enjoy the view of the Druid Cave: The Druid Cave is the only structure of its kind in Southeastern Europe. When this cave was discovered, it was considered a temple, but research has shown it is a cave. It was found during the filming of a film about the Celtic people who once inhabited the area of Mount Juhor.
- The remains of the former Celtic city are located on the Juhor mountain: The remains of this city were found only in 1997, and on that occasion, as many as 140 items belonging to the Celts were excavated.
- Long hikes are one of the most popular activities on this mountain: There is a well-maintained walking trail on Juhor mountain, and its beginning is near the monastery of St. Nicholas near the village of Svojnovo. At the top of Juhor are a book where you can sign in when you arrive and a seal. On top of the mountain, the remains of the Tribals, a people who contributed significantly to the Balkans, were found.
How to get to Juhor mountain?
Juhor Mountain is about an hour's drive from Paracin, and you can reach it by car in two ways.
- By car: You can come from Paracin via Route 158, i.e., exit the city on Toma Zivanovic Street and follow the route listed below. Another way is to take the road through Cepure and Rasevice, and then on Route 187.
