Fortress Petrus - Most important information

Petrus is a fortress located about 10 kilometers from Paracin, near the village of Zabrega. It is situated on a hill surrounded by the river Crnica. This fortress was the center of the border, i.e., the Krajina region of the Serbian state during the 14th century. From that location, the connection between Pomeranian Voivodeship and the Timok valley was controlled.

History of Fortress Petrus
It is believed that the lords of this area, and even the fortress itself, were the perfect Vukoslav and his son Crep. However, research has shown that this fortification existed even in the time of the Romans since Roman copper coins were found here.
  • During the reign of Stefan Nemanja, a new fortress was built on Petrus: Since the power of Stefan Nemanja, a new fort was built on the territory of Petrus, while the entire area represented the neighboring parish of the Serbian state of Nemanjic. In addition, it was the only area under their rule throughout their reign.
  • The last historical data for the Petrus fortress is related to the year 1413: Research has shown that this year the Ottoman ruler Musa conquered this fortress, along with several other forts such as Koprijan, Krusevac, Sokolnica, and others. Soon, it lost its strategic position and became relaxed.
