This is a self-guided exploration game where you'll be solving a paranormal case involving real people and their wandering ghosts. The file on Boston's North End is still open, and the ghost of Paul Revere walks it with you. You, with your detective and observational skills, and a little help from the Questo app, will try to close it in 2 hours.
The route takes you from the waterfront through 13 of the North End's darkest addresses. Your job is to write down the names the history books left out.
You'll discover dark stories like the five men killed in the Boston Massacre, the woman hanged as a witch four years before Salem, and the street that drowned in molasses in 1919.
Each location involves inspecting a real-world object and solving a challenge.
Best after dark with your phone torch on. About 1.6 miles of walking, with unlimited breaks.
Hints and 24/7 support available if you get stuck.
Perfect for Halloween or any night you're in the mood for creepy ghost stories.
The game starts at Christopher Columbus Park. After booking, we'll message you a code and activation link. Activate with your own email, then log in to the Questo app with that email. No message? Open the Questo app, tap "Bought a quest somewhere else?" and enter your booking reference number.
The game ends at the Great Molasses Flood plaque in Langone Park, on Commercial Street.
You'll start in the waterfront park on Atlantic Avenue, where the app opens your case file and introduces the agent running it. Your first task will be to crack a password from the park's welcome sign. Once you solve it, the ghost of Paul Revere joins the case and walks the rest of the route with you.
You'll walk to the granite halls of Quincy Market and find the statue that holds the missing word in your file. You'll learn that the whole market stands on a filled-in harbor, and what archaeologists dug out from under it.
You'll continue up State Street, past the site of the first house in Boston, to the Old State House. You'll decode a scrambled instruction and look down at the cobblestone ring under the balcony to answer it. You'll learn the names of the five men who died on that spot in 1770.
You'll stop at Faneuil Hall, the Cradle of Liberty, and compare the Samuel Adams statue with your photo to find what's missing. You'll learn where the money that built the hall came from.
You'll cross into the North End at the bronze boxer on Hanover Street and complete his nickname from the inscription, then walk up to Caffè Vittoria and find the odd word out on its signs. You'll learn whose name the world champion really carried, and what the records say about a famous haunted building on this street.
You'll reach North Square and the oldest house in downtown Boston, then cross to a plaque that finishes a rhyme about the midnight ride. You'll learn who lived in Revere's house after him, and why only his name was kept.
You'll walk to St Stephen's on Hanover Street and spot what has been added to your photo of a small bronze plaque. You'll learn about Goody Glover, hanged as a witch in 1688, four years before Salem, for praying in the wrong language.
You'll stop at Old North, the church of the two lanterns, and pull a code out of the welcome plaque on its brick wall. You'll learn about the eleven hundred bodies in the vaults under the floor, and the British major whose widow was sent the wrong body.
You'll climb to Copp's Hill Burying Ground and pick the real Freedom Trail marker out of four photos. You'll learn about Prince Hall, and the thousand people buried on the slope behind his stone with no markers at all.
You'll finish on Commercial Street at a small blue plaque, where you'll use every fragment you've collected to find one name among the dead. You'll learn how a wave of molasses killed twenty-one people here in January 1919.
