We will pick you up early from Cusco’s Main Square at approximately 5:30 a.m. (depending on the train schedule). From there, you’ll travel by private van to the train station in Ollantaytambo. The drive takes about 1.5 hours along scenic mountain roads until reaching Kilometer 104, the starting point of the hike.
Your journey begins in Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, where ancient Incan foundations blend seamlessly with Spanish colonial architecture. Departing early, you’ll travel through breathtaking Andean landscapes en route to the Sacred Valley. As you arrive in Ollantaytambo, you’ll discover its impressive stone ruins, an enduring testament to its ancient cultural and strategic importance.
After a brief photo stop in Ollantaytambo, you’ll board the train to KM 104, taking in panoramic views of the Urubamba River and the stunning surrounding landscapes. Upon arrival at KM 104, a quieter starting point of the Inca Trail, you’ll begin your hike toward the lesser known Chachabamba ruins, an archaeological site featuring well preserved stone structures nestled at 2,250 meters above sea level.
From Chachabamba, you'll climb steep Incan stairways through a tropical cloud forest abundant with orchids, ferns, and birds. The ascent leads to Wiñay Wayna, a standout Incan site named “Forever Young” in Quechua. With terraced ruins against a waterfall, it's a scenic spot for a rest and maybe a meal.
After lunch, your journey continues to the Sun Gate, known as Inti Punku in Quechua. From this iconic vantage point, you'll enjoy your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu, dramatically framed by the surrounding mountains and valleys. Seeing the Lost City of the Incas emerge after a day of trekking is a truly unforgettable and rewarding experience.
As the day winds down, you'll descend to the town of Aguas Calientes, nestled at the base of Machu Picchu. Named after its natural hot springs, this charming town offers a well earned place to rest for the night. After checking into your accommodation, you may choose to unwind in the soothing thermal waters, perfect for relaxing tired muscles and reflecting on the day's incredible journey. With the most challenging part of the trail behind you, tomorrow promises something extraordinary: an in depth exploration of the Incan citadel of Machu Picchu.
On your second day in Aguas Calientes, you'll rise early and take a bus up the mountain to Machu Picchu. Surrounded by lush green peaks and centuries old stone architecture, you'll explore the rich history and enduring mysteries of the Lost City of the Incas with the insight of a professional guide.
After returning to Aguas Calientes for lunch and perhaps some souvenir shopping, you’ll board the train back to Ollantaytambo, enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the Sacred Valley one last time as your journey comes to a close.
Finally, you’ll return to Cusco by bus or private transportation, concluding your unforgettable two day Inca adventure with lasting memories of the majestic Machu Picchu.
