In general, the area combined with many rivers and streams, especially during the winter months, forced the construction of bridges.
The golden age of Zagori allowed rich families to finance expensive and sometimes unsuccessful projects linking villages.
Today, about 60 bridges are saved in a very large state and there are testimonies of another hundred that have been destroyed.

The area has been integrated into the European network of protected Areas NATURA 2000. The monastery of Stomio was built in 1594 on the other side of the river and was moved to its new location in 1774. The famous monk Paisios termed there and he was its main renovator.
