Built in the 11th century, the fortress served as a strategic defensive stronghold and later as a residence for the archbishops of Salzburg. The castle also gained international fame as a filming location for the classic WWII movie Where Eagles Dare (1968), starring Richard Burton as Major John Smith, Clint Eastwood as Lieutenant Morris Schaffer, and Mary Ure as Mary Ellison.
