Peru: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)
Rainbow Mountain, locally known as Vinicunca, is an impressive geological formation located in the Cusco region of Peru. Trekking Ausangate
The Ausangate Trekking is one of the most spectacular trekking routes in the Cusco region. This circuit surrounds the majestic Nevado Ausangate, which is considered an apu (sacred mountain) in Andean cosmology.

Cusco City – Transport to Rainbow Mountains – Vinicunca – Summit at 5,200 m on ATV – Return – Transport to Huchuy Phinaya for lunch – Continue to the Base Camp of Nevado Santa Catalina at 4,700 m. Breakfast at the hotel. Start of trekking in the Rainbow Mountains. Ascent to Mount Vinicunca (5,150 m) on ATVs. By private transport, continue to Pueblo Huchuy Phinaya for lunch (4,400 m), start trekking with donkeys to Santa Catalina Base Camp (4,700 m). We will spend the night in tents at an altitude of 4,700 m. • • Starting altitude: 3,400 m (Cusco) • Transport to Vinicunca: Approximately 3 hours by private vehicle to the trailhead. • Ascent to Mount Vinicunca: 5,150 m by ATV. • Lunch altitude: 4,400 m (Pueblo Huchuy Phinaya). • Trekking distance from Huchuy Phinaya to Base Camp: Approximately 10 km with a gradual ascent. • Night altitude: 4,700 m. We will camp in tents at the Base Camp of Nevado Santa Catalina.
Base Camp of Nevado Santa Catalina – Trekking to the Moraine at 4,900 m – Summit day at 5,500 m – Descent to Base Camp Nevado Jampa/Maria Huaman Ticlla at 4,872 m. Early morning and breakfast at 2:00 a.m., trekking to the Moraine (4,900 m). Start climbing with mountain equipment such as crampons, boots, ice axes, helmets, ropes, etc. Summit day to Nevado Santa Catalina (5,500 m). After summiting, we will descend via another valley, trekking down through the moraine to Nevado Maria Base Camp (4,872 m). We will spend the night in tents at an altitude of 4,872 m. • • Wake-up time: 2:00 a.m. with breakfast. • Trekking to the Moraine: Ascent to 4,900 m. • Start of climbing: Using mountain gear like crampons, boots, ice axes, helmets, and ropes. • Summit of Nevado Santa Catalina: 5,500 m. • Descent: Through a different valley via the moraine. • Total distance for the day: Approximately 12 km (6 km ascent and 6 km descent). • Night altitude: 4,872 m. We will camp at Base Camp Nevado Jampa.
Base Camp Nevado Jampa/Maria Huaman Ticlla – Trekking through 7 Lagoons to the village of Pacchanta at 4,200 m – Pachamanca lunch – Private transport to Cusco. Morning and breakfast at 7:00 a.m. From Nevado Maria Base Camp, trekking down the valley, passing 7 lakes to the village of Pacchanta with hot springs, where we will have our great lunch in Baños Termales. Return to the hotel in Cusco. Night at the hotel. • • Wake-up time: 7:00 a.m. with breakfast. • Trekking from Base Camp: Descent through the valley passing 7 lagoons until reaching the village of Pacchanta. • Altitude in Pacchanta: 4,200 m. Lunch in the thermal baths. • Total trekking distance: Approximately 15 km. • Return transport to Cusco: Approximately 3 hours by private vehicle. • Night at the hotel in Cusco.
