The Huayhuash trek on the mountain range is one of the most beautiful treks in the world – and it’s easy to believe.
The villages Pocpa and Llamac are usually the trailheads for this trek.
The entire length of the Cordillera Huayhuash ranges only 30 km but within its compact area lays amazing towering peaks. At almost every turn, you come face to face with glistening vertical walls of ice, snow and rock. Beautiful lakes, different kinds of birds and keep an eye out for the massive Andean Condors and for Siula Grande 6,344 m.s.n.m , the site where the popular book and motion picture “Touching the Void” took place!

Early morning departure from Huaraz by private transport to Cuartelhuain, the starting point of our trek. From here, we begin our gradual ascent toward Cacanan Punta Pass (4,700 m), enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. We then descend to Janca (Mitucocha), a beautiful valley beside the turquoise lake, where we set up our first campsite.
Today’s hike leads us gently up to Carhuac Pass, from where we’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Siula and Yerupajá snow peaks — two of the highest and most iconic mountains in the Huayhuash range. We continue down through open valleys until we reach the stunning Carhuacocha Lake, famous for its mirror-like reflections of the surrounding peaks.
A long but unforgettable day. We climb toward the Siula viewpoint, one of the most photographed places in the Andes, where you can see three dazzling lakes — Quesillococha, Siula, and Gangrajanca — perfectly aligned below the mighty Siula Grande. After crossing Siula Pass (4,830 m), we descend to our camp in Huayhuash Valley.
We trek toward the southern end of the Cordillera Huayhuash, ascending gradually to Trapecio Pass (5,000 m), one of the highest points of our journey. The panoramic views from here are spectacular. We descend into the wide and peaceful Cuyocpampa Valley, where we set up camp for the night. Optional hike to the San Antonio viewpoint for even more impressive views.
Today we cross the highest point of the trek, Santa Rosa Pass (5,070 m), offering sweeping views of the surrounding giants: Cuyoc, Puscanturpa, Trapecio, Siula, Yerupajá, Sarapo, and Jurao. After a long descent to the village of Huayllapa, our private transport awaits to take us to the town of Cajatambo, marking the end of our unforgettable Huayhuash adventure.
