The Salkantay Hike 4 Days comes from the name of the mountain that means “Wild Mountain” located in the Cordillera del Vilcanota considered the second largest mountain in Cusco and of spiritual value.

Salkantay trek is an alternative trek to visit Machu Picchu, the level of difficulty is similar to the Classic Inca Trail.

The Salkantay starts with a cold climate that the journey changes to a warm environment. Salkantay is considered by Natgeo as one of the most pleasant hikes in the world, offering in its beautiful landscape a variety of flora and fauna.

Itinerary

    Day 1

    CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – SORAYPAMPA

    From Cusco we will depart to Mollepata where we will arrive around 8.00 am. In Mollepata we will have breakfast and prepare our backpacks that will be given to the horseman. From Mollepata we will take a bus to Challacancha for about 45 minutes, from here we start our hike for 3 hours to Soraypampa, we will be passing by the viewpoint of Hornada Pata until we arrive at Soraypampa where we will have lunch and the place of the first campsite for the night. After Lunch in Soraypampa, you can hike up to the Humantay Lake (optional) located at 4220 m/13,850 ft the hike to the Humantay lake will take approximately 1 hour and a half. The return descent will take about 45 minutes. In the evening we will be served hot drinks, at 7:00 p.m. we will have dinner and finally, we will head to our tents. Hike time: 11 km / 7 mi. /5 hours

    SORAYPAMPA – CHALLHUAY

    Very early at 4:30 am, we will wake up, so we can enjoy a warm breakfast for the cold of the area. This day we will begin the most difficult stretch of the trek through dangerous trails that lead to Salkantaypampa, a rest area at 4 100 m.a.s.l. (1 hour hiking). We will continue descending until we reach Soyrococha (4400 m.a.s.l.), another resting place, and we will finish at Abra Salkantay, a pass over 4632 m.a.s.l. between the Humantay and Salkantay snow-capped peaks (2 hours trekking). From the highest point, we will enjoy an enchanting panorama formed by a mountain range and part of the traditional Inca Trail, in this place we will be able to build “apachetas” (stone towers) for fortune and protection during your journey. We will then descend for 1 hour and a half until we reach “Wayracmachay” where we will enjoy a traditional lunch and a well-deserved rest.

    CHALLHUAY - SAHUAYACO – HIDROELECTRICA – AGUAS CALIENTES:

    We will start the day with a warm breakfast that will keep us in rhythm for our hike. We will walk for 40 minutes until we reach “Collpa” at 2,850 meters above sea level, a village populated by friendly people where we will be able to rest. We will continue our hike for 2 hours ans half through Trails that showing waterfalls, hot springs and fruity trees until we arrive to “Wiñaypoco”, Then we will arrive to “Sahuayaco” at 2,200 masl, a place known as “La Playa”. From here you will board our private transportation that will take you to Hidroeléctrica (2160 masl), here you can enjoy a traditional lunch. After the rest we will start the hike for 3 hours to Machu Picchu town, surrounded by dense vegetation and the train tracks. In Machu Picchu Pueblo, we will have dinner and overnight at the hotel, before resting the tour guide will give us the indications about the expedition to Machu Picchu the next day.

    AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

    Machu Picchu

    Very early at 4:00 a.m., we will have breakfast at the hotel and start a 2 hour walk to the archaeological park of Machu Picchu, we will have a tour of 2 hours and a half inside Machu Picchu, where from the Guardian’s house we will observe the archeological Inca citadel, we will visit temples, streets, terraces and other archaeological remains of the Inca culture. At the end of the tour we will return to the town of Machu Picchu, where you will have free time for additional activities such as; the Museum of Machu Picchu, the butterfly farm, visit the hot springs and the waterfall of Machu Picchu, the market, which can be done 30 minutes before the departure of the train. Our return to Ollantaytambo is 1 hour and 40 minutes. When you get off the train our private transportation will be waiting to take you back to the city. We will finish our services leaving our travelers in their hotels or near the Plaza de Armas.
