We will depart Cusco very early in the morning in your vehicle. We will cross interesting valleys between the Andes Mountains and picturesque rural communities. We will visit the pre-Incan tombs of the Lupaca culture and then stop in Paucartambo, a beautiful colonial town, and visit the interesting town museum. On the way, we will have lunch in the cloud forest. We will continue your descent through the cloud forest, an area rich in endemic species, such as the spectacled bear and the cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird that performs a unique courtship ritual. We may also see orchids, bromeliads, ferns, etc. We will continue observing the spectacular nature throughout your journey until we reach the Pilcopata lodge. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast at the lodge, we'll depart for Atalaya, with a visit to a coca plantation en route (and, optionally, a hummingbird garden). In Atalaya, we'll receive rubber boots and take a 40-minute boat ride to the lodge. Upon arrival, you can rest or swim in the river. After lunch, you'll have the option to do a free zipline, flying through the treetops and rappelling. In the afternoon, we'll visit Lake Machuwasi, where we'll raft to observe birds like the hoatzin, and, if you're lucky, other animals like monkeys and capybaras. After dinner, we'll take a night hike to observe insects, frogs, and other forest animals.
Very early in the morning, we will board your boat and head to the macaw clay lick, a wall along the riverbank where different species of parrots, such as the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, the chestnut-fronted macaw, among others, gather every morning. Here they eat the clay, which is rich in minerals and helps them digest and eliminate toxins from their bodies. We will then return to the lodge for breakfast and take the 40-minute boat ride back to Atalaya, where we will board the vehicle for the return to Cusco. We will have lunch along the way back to Cusco, arriving around 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
