We will leave Cusco very early in the morning in one of our vehicles. We will cross interesting valleys between the Andes Mountains and picturesque rural communities. We will visit the chullpas of Ninamarca, a pre-Incan culture (Lupaca), and then stop in Paucartambo, a beautiful colonial town, to enjoy breakfast. We will continue our journey for about 40 minutes to the entrance of Manu Acjanaco National Park. We will descend to the cloud forest where we will have lunch. We will descend through the cloud forest, an area rich in endemic species, such as the spectacled bear and the cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird, which performs a unique courtship ritual. We may also see orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and more. We will continue observing the spectacular nature throughout our journey until we reach our lodge, Pilcopata, where we will spend our first night.
We'll have a very early breakfast and then take a walk, during which we can observe forest fauna, such as monkeys and birds. We'll then visit a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center (optional). After this, we'll travel to Puerto Atalaya, located along the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at 500 meters above sea level. There, we'll begin our boat descent to observe the diversity of bird species, such as herons, vultures, cormorants, and more, until we reach the lodge. There, we'll swim in the river and have lunch. In the afternoon, we'll visit Lake Machuwasi, where we'll explore by raft to observe birds, such as the prehistoric hoatzin, and, with luck, other animals such as monkeys and capybaras. We'll then return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Very early in the morning, we will board our boat to visit the macaw clay lick, where we will observe various species of parrots and macaws feeding on mineral-rich clay, essential for their digestion. We will then return to the lodge for a delicious breakfast. Afterwards, we will take a 2- to 3-hour hike through the jungle to explore its flora and fauna. Upon returning, we will have lunch and have time to rest or swim in the river. In the afternoon, you can participate in the optional and free canopy tour (zip line), gliding between platforms high in the trees and ending with an exciting 20-meter rappel. At dusk, we will take a night hike to observe insects, frogs, and other jungle creatures. We will end the day with dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.
After a delicious breakfast, we'll observe the hummingbirds surrounding the lodge and then board our boat for the 40-minute return trip to Puerto Atalaya, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. We'll have lunch along the route in the cloud forest on the way back to Cusco, arriving around 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
