Early in the morning your guide will pick you up at your hotel to take the first train to Chachabamba (KM 104). Here you will begin your hike following the original Inca trail through the beautiful Andean mountains. The first Inca ruins you will encounter are those of Chachabamba, a small archaeological complex that is believed to have once been a guardhouse for Machu Picchu. From here, the trail climbs gradually for four hours to reach 2,650 meters. You will visit the site of Wiñay Wayna, which means “Eternal Youth”. The name comes from the orchids that dot the landscape, making Wiñay Wayna perhaps the most beautiful place on the Trail. After touring the site and having lunch, you will continue to the “Sun Gate (Inti Punku)”, from where you will be able to see Machu Picchu in all its majesty and grandeur.
