Its circular base is surrounded by the Vilcanota River on the north side of the citadel of Machupicchu. Its construction must have been forced and extremely dangerous: it is a very steep and narrow path, which includes several stretches with stairs carved into the living rock at the very edge of the vertical rock wall.
