If your hotel is outside the center of Cusco City, we will meet you at the main square, Plaza de Armas. Wait for us next to the water fountain at the Plaza de Armas.
We will depart from Cusco and head towards Challacancha (3400m/11154ft), passing through the charming village of Mollepata (3000m/9843ft), where we can make a brief stop to stretch our legs and take in the early morning views of the countryside. Upon reaching Challacancha, we will meet our horsemen and the rest of the trekking group, marking the official start of our adventure.
Our hike begins in a magnificent valley, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. As we trek, we will be surrounded by the towering, snow-capped peaks of Humantay (5217m/17116ft) and Salkantay (6264m/20551ft), which provide a breathtaking backdrop. The crisp mountain air and the pristine beauty of these peaks make for an inspiring start to our journey.
Our campsite for the night will be at Soraypampa (3700m/12139ft), a scenic location that offers stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. In the afternoon, there is an optional hike to the stunning Humantay Lake, a turquoise gem nestled high in the mountains. This hike provides an opportunity to explore more of the region's natural beauty and to acclimate further to the altitude.
After a hearty breakfast, we will begin our ascent towards the breathtaking Salkantay Pass (4600m/15092ft). This challenging yet rewarding trek provides an exceptional view of the towering, snow-capped Salkantay (6264m/20551ft), one of the highest peaks in the region. As we make our way up, the panoramic vistas around us will inspire awe and admiration for the natural beauty of the Andes.
Upon reaching the Salkantay Pass, we will take a moment to absorb the stunning scenery and perhaps even catch our breath at this high altitude viewpoint. From here, we will begin our descent, gradually transitioning into a lush and verdant ecosystem as we move lower. The landscape transforms, offering glimpses of diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this unique environment.
Our campsite for the night will be in Collpapampa (3000m/9842ft), nestled amidst the tropical forest. Here, the climate is warmer and more humid, creating a habitat rich in biodiversity. Despite the presence of mosquitoes, the surroundings offer a serene setting to rest and rejuvenate after a day of challenging trekking.
The third day of our trek is dedicated to exploring the rich flora and agricultural plantations of the region. We will begin by descending into a dense and vibrant forest, where we will be immersed in the natural beauty of the area. Along the way, we will encounter a variety of plant species, including colorful orchids, delicate bromeliads, and other exotic plants that thrive in this lush environment. The trek through this forested paradise will be a feast for the senses, with the sights and sounds of nature surrounding us. As we continue our descent, the landscape opens up to reveal expansive coffee, cacao, and fruit plantations. These plantations are not only vital to the local economy but also contribute to the rich cultural heritage of the area. We will have the opportunity to learn about the cultivation and harvesting processes of these crops, gaining insight into the agricultural traditions that have sustained communities here for generations.
In the afternoon, we will arrive at Wiñaypoco (2650m/8694ft), Granadilla (2100m/6890ft), and eventually Lucmabamba (2000m/6561ft), where we will set up our campsite for the night. These picturesque villages offer a glimpse into rural life in the Andes, where traditions are deeply rooted in the land and its resources.
During our stay in Lucmabamba, you will have the unique opportunity to interact with a local rural family. Here, you will witness firsthand the meticulous process of coffee cultivation, from planting and nurturing the coffee trees to harvesting the ripe cherries. You'll learn about the methods of drying and roasting the beans, culminating in the preparation of a delicious cup of coffee. This immersive experience allows you to connect with the local culture and gain a deeper appreciation for the hard work and dedication that goes into producing this prized commodity.
After a satisfying breakfast in Lucmabamba, we will embark on the next leg of our journey, hiking up the historic Inca trail towards the archaeological site of Llactapata (2650m/8694ft). This ancient site offers a fascinating glimpse into Inca culture and history, with remnants of terraces and structures that once served as strategic points along the network of Inca trails.
The hike to Llactapata takes us through diverse terrain, where we will encounter a variety of local flora and fauna endemic to the region. Along the way, our knowledgeable guide will provide insights into the significance of the site and its role in the Inca civilization. Upon reaching Llactapata, we will be rewarded with panoramic views of Machu Picchu Mountain and the picturesque Vilcanota Canyon, offering a breathtaking perspective of the surrounding landscape.
From Llactapata, we will continue our descent towards the Hydroelectric train station (1950m/6398ft). Here, we will take a well-deserved break, enjoying a moment to rest and refresh before continuing our trek to Machu Picchu town.
This vibrant town, also known as Aguas Calientes, is nestled in the lush valley below Machu Picchu and serves as our base for exploring the iconic ancient citadel. Tonight, we will settle into our accommodations in Machu Picchu town, where you can relax and prepare for our upcoming visit to Machu Picchu the following day. Enjoy the evening in this bustling town, perhaps exploring its markets or indulging in a delicious meal that highlights local flavors and specialties.
Begin your day bright and early with a 5:30 am departure from your hotel after a hearty breakfast. A comfortable tourist bus will take you to the magnificent Machu Picchu (2,400 meters / 7,874 feet), where you'll arrive around 6:00 am, just in time to witness the breathtaking views as the first light of day illuminates the ancient citadel.
A guided tour will lead you through the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage site, where you'll dive into the fascinating history of the Inca civilization, their architectural wonders, and their cultural heritage. Your guide will reveal the secrets of the archaeological site, enhancing your understanding of this mystical place.
Finally, make your way back to Aguas Calientes, where your train will depart in the afternoon. Before heading to the station, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the town’s charming restaurants. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, a vehicle will be waiting to transport you comfortably back to Cusco.
