We pick you up from the hotel in Cusco or Sacred Valley
We pick you up. The road to Kuporo will offer us the chance to visit two Andean baroque catholic churches, impressive views of Andean mountains and glaciers, and meet inhabitants of the high Andes who still keep part of their ancestral customs, typical attire, and products; some of them are farmers and breeders of South American camelids such as llamas and alpacas!. Halfway through this magnificent road trip, a picnic will be served to recuperate some energy for the second half, where we will go up the last high pass and start the spectacular 4,000 meters (13000 ft) descent to the tropical rainforests in which we will be able to observe varied ecosystems, a sudden increase in vegetation cover, waterfalls, and the Arazá river. We arrive at Kuporo Lodge where we will be welcomed by the lodge staff for dinner time and an informational talk about the area, and the sustainable role of the lodge.
Early morning, accompanied by our nature interpreter, we will hike along the trails of the lodge where we will have the opportunity to observe a unique variety of flora, a large number of arthropods, such as butterflies, crickets, grasshoppers, locusts, beetles, as well as birds, mammals such as monkeys, armadillos, porcupines, Kalinowsky's agouti, anteaters and rodents, amphibians such as tree frogs, reptiles such as the Tegu Cusco, and the small flat-fronted caiman among others. A delicious breakfast will be welcoming us back after the hike. Later that day we will hike by the Arazá River close to the lodge, or choose to adventure on a longer walk in the area, depending on our energy levels. After lunch, we can choose to take an afternoon rest or wander around the lodge property. A mid-afternoon river bathing can also be a good choice. After dinner, we'll offer you a night walk in the vicinity of the lodge to observe fauna with nocturnal habits.
After an early breakfast, we will drive northeast towards Tambopata (Madre de Dios). Along the way, towns and areas of deforested forests and heavily impacted by gold mining activity, are observable. On our arrival to the city of Puerto Maldonado (the capital and biggest city in Madre de Dios), we will be met by Sachavayocs Lodge staff who will guide our transfer from the lodges´ office to the Port of the Tambopata River and navigate with us upstream the Tambopata River to arrive at the Lodge. Along the way, we will have the chance to observe a variety of birds, alligators, capybaras, and monkeys. Box lunch on the boat. Our guide will lead us to the lodge reception to check-in. Afternoon rest is optional. After a relaxing break, we will walk through the jungle as an introduction to the low jungle forest and familiarize ourselves with its inhabitants. After dark a night walk in search of nocturnal fauna and arthropods is a must.
Today we will visit a wonder of the natural world, the spectacular Collpa Chuncho, a cliff on the edge of the river made of salts and clays visited by a spectacle of wildlife with the three main species of macaws meeting all at the same time, parrots and parakeets, gathered to ingest clay, a unique behavior found only in this part of the planet. To observe this ritual we will depart by boat very early and go upstream the Tambopata River, so breakfast will be served upon arrival in the area. Along the way to the clay lick, we will have the opportunity to observe capybaras, caimans, and hopefully jaguars and tapirs (the two largest land mammals in the Amazon rainforest). Lunch at the lodge, visit to a pristine lake. After a paused and easy walk on jungle trails, we visit“Condenado” lake where we will board a rowing canoe and spot the varied wildlife of the surroundings, such as monkeys, alligators, hoatzins, macaws, toucans, and hopefully an Anaconda snake.
Breakfast and departure on the boat to the river port of Puerto Maldonado.
