Ancient chronicles say that its walls were covered in gold and filled with gilded representations of nature. Then, visit the Cathedral, the most imposing monument in the Main Square. Inside, it houses hundreds of paintings from the Cuzqueña School and other works in gold, silver and precious stones. This place is also known as "The Temple of the Sun"(QuriKancha: golden temple). Upon the arrival of the Spanish, it became the basis for the construction of the Santo Domingo Convent.
The Cusco Cathedral has countless works from the Cusqueña school, combining the styles of European devotional painting of the 17th century, with the symbolism of indigenous artists from the Andes of Cusco.
Its name comes from the Quechua word Cusipata or "patio of joy" because public celebrations such as bullfights were held here. It was separated from the Plaza de Armas when the city was drawn up in colonial times.
