Your adventure kicks off before sunrise with a private hotel pickup in Cusco (4–5 am). As we drive through the Sacred Valley toward the Km 82—the official starting point of the Classic Inca Trail—you’ll witness the Andes awakening with the first light of day. We make a short stop in Ollantaytambo, a charming town where you can enjoy an optional breakfast and pick up any last-minute essentials.
Your adventure begins at Piscacucho, or Km 82 (2,700 m / 8,858 ft), the official gateway to the legendary Inca Trail. Here you’ll meet your passionate trekking team and skilled chef before crossing the checkpoint with your passport and stepping onto history itself. The trail winds along the mighty Urubamba River, where breathtaking views set the tone for the journey ahead. Soon, you’ll detour toward the ancient site of Wilcarakay (2,750 m/ 9,022 ft)
From Willcaracay, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the ancient site of Patallacta, nestled deep in the Urubamba Valley. Your professional guide will bring the Inca world to life with fascinating stories that turn every step into a journey through time. After a short 15-minute descent into the lush Cusichaca Valley, the trail begins to climb steadily toward Huayllabamba. Here, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery and fresh Andean air, you’ll be rewarded with a freshly prepared lunch fuels you for the final ascent to Ayapata camp, a peaceful spot tucked away from the crowds—your first night under the stars of the Andes
After a well-deserved lunch and a short siesta, we begin a rewarding two-hour ascent to Ayapata camp (3,300 m / 10,829 ft). Far from the crowds, this serene hideaway offers your first magical night beneath the star-filled skies of the Andes. Surrounded by crisp mountain air and the silence of ancient trails.
The Great Challenge of the Classic Inca Trail! This is the most demanding day of the trek! After a hearty breakfast and a revitalizing coca tea, we set out early to tackle the longest and toughest stretch of the trail (15 km / 9.4 mi). The hike begins through an enchanting Andean forest, where native polylepis trees surround ancient Inca steps. Our steady climb leads us to Llulluchapampa (3,700 m / 12,139 ft), a perfect spot to rest, use basic facilities, and even buy a snack from local villagers. From here, the real challenge begins: a continuous ascent of 1.5 to 2 hours that will test your endurance as the altitude rises. At last, we conquer the legendary Warmiwañusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215 m / 13,825 ft). Standing at the highest point of the trail, your effort is rewarded with breathtaking views of towering glaciers, dramatic valleys, and the majestic Andes stretching endlessly before you.
After conquering the first challenge, we descend for about 1.5 hours along ancient stone steps until we reach Pacaymayu (3,625 m / 11,893 ft), where a well-deserved lunch awaits in the heart of the valley. But the adventure continues! We ascend once again toward the Runkurakay Pass (3,970 m / 13,024 ft). Along the way, we explore the enigmatic oval structure of Runkurakay, believed to be an Inca tambo—a resting lodge for imperial messengers. After learning its fascinating history from your guide, we hike another hour to reach the second-highest point of the Inca Trail. From here, the scenery is simply breathtaking: lush mountains, dramatic peaks, and the cloud forest stretching endlessly like a vibrant green tapestry.
After a well-deserved rest at the Runcuracay Pass, we descend for about 45 minutes until we reach a true gem of the past: the archaeological site of Sayacmarca. Perched in a strategic location and blending mysteriously with nature, it will leave you in awe—especially as the last rays of sunlight cast a golden glow over its stones. Just below lies Conchamarca, a smaller Inca outpost nestled in the cloud forest, where the trail passes right through its heart. Continuing along the timeless Inca Trail, we arrive at Chaquicocha (3,600m/8,811 ft), our campsite for the night. Here, you’ll enjoy an experience that no luxury hotel can match: sleeping under a crystal-clear sky filled with thousands of stars. Gazing at the Andean constellations in this magical place is a breathtaking moment you will never forget.
Day 3 of the Classic Inca Trail is often called the most flexible and culturally rich part of the trek, and for good reason. After a restful night and energizing breakfast, we continue along the original Inca cobblestone path toward Phuyupatamarca, the “city in the clouds.” Along the way, you’ll marvel at orchids, hummingbirds, hidden caves, and even cross a 25-meter Inca tunnel before reaching panoramic views of the Urubamba Valley and snowcapped giants like Salkantay and Veronica. From here, the famous “gringo killer” descent begins, winding down Inca stairs through lush cloud forest and rainforest, with visits to remarkable archaeological sites such as Intipata. By afternoon, we arrive at Wiñaywayna camp, where you can enjoy a hearty meal, relax, and explore the stunning Wiñaywayna ruins, often compared to a mini Machu Picchu. The evening closes with a heartfelt farewell ceremony, honoring the porters and cooks who make this unforgettable journey possible.
The highlight of your 4-Day Premium Inca Trail has arrived! Wake up at 3:30 am with a hot tea or coffee and a freshly packed breakfast before setting out on the final stretch. Be among the first to enter the trail at 5:30 am and hike 1.5 hours to the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where the first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu awaits at sunrise. From there, descend to the iconic postcard viewpoint for unforgettable photos. Your expert guide will bring this ancient citadel to life with fascinating stories as you make your way through circuit 1. Later, ride the bus to Aguas Calientes, then board the train to Ollantaytambo and continue by private transport back to Cusco. This day marks the perfect finale to your Classic Inca Trail—an experience of challenge, wonder, and memories to treasure forever.
