We begin your expedition very early with a 4:30 AM pick-up from your accommodation in Cusco. We start your journey through the majestic Andes Mountains. We then make a brief stop in Paucartambo, known as the folkloric capital of Cusco. Here we will have breakfast and then a short tour. Afterward, we continue your route to the entrance of Manu National Park, one of the most protected natural areas in South America. We will continue our descent through the cloud forest. During the trip, we will make several stops to observe various bird species such as trogons, quetzals, tanagers, and oropendolas, and we have the opportunity to spot the woolly monkey. We will have lunch en route and eventually arrive at the home of Peru's exotic national bird: the Andean cock-of-the-rock. For your first night, we will stay at Bambu Lodge, arriving at approximately 5:00 PM.
After an early breakfast, we have the option to observe beautiful and colorful bird species such as tanagers, honeycreepers, manakins, euphonia, and others at the feeder located at Bambu Lodge. After leaving the lodge, we will head towards Atalaya Port. Before arriving at Atalaya Port, we will visit a hummingbird garden where we will see various hummingbird species, including tanagers, oropendolas, king vultures, titi monkeys, and more. From Atalaya, we will continue our boat trip to a hot spring. We will spend about 30 minutes at the "Shintuya Hot Springs" and then continue our journey downriver to Hummingbird Lodge, where we will spend the night. An optional night hike on one of the trails in search of nocturnal creatures is available.
In the morning, after an early breakfast, we will head towards the Manu National Park Reserve. We will travel up the Alto Madre de Dios River to the Manu River, with a short stop at the Limonal ranger station to present our permits. The beaches, especially during the dry season, are teeming with nesting and feeding birds, including herons, egrets, Orinoco geese, terns, and skimmers, to name a few. Some beaches are home to black and white caimans and side-necked turtles. There is also a chance of spotting a jaguar basking in the sun, the third largest feline in the world. We will see several primate species on this river trip, including red howler monkeys and squirrel monkeys. After lunch en route on the Manu River, we will arrive at Casa Matsiguenka. We will have the afternoon to explore some of the trails through the pristine rainforest. An optional night hike in search of nocturnal creatures is available.
Very early in the morning, we begin your excursions on Lake Salvador using a government-owned catamaran. This morning we'll have the opportunity to observe herons, cormorants, eagles, hawks, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and giant otters. The giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) can reach up to 1.82 meters in length, is now endangered, and weighs up to 31 kg. They consume between 4 and 5 kilos of fish a day and their favorite is the piranha. We'll also look for some of the 15 species of monkeys that inhabit this area. After visiting Lake Salvador, we'll return to Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, from where we'll hike to the Macaw Clay Lick. At this clay lick, you can see red, green, and scarlet macaws. Around 10:00 a.m., the macaws begin to descend. This colorful and noisy scene continues for approximately 30 minutes as the birds eat the clay, a phenomenon known as "geophagy." It is an amazing spectacle of wildlife in the world.
Early in the morning, we'll begin your journey downriver to Boca Manu, and from there, we'll start our trip upstream to the Tapir Clay Lick. We'll explore both sides of the Manu River, with the option of spotting jaguars, capybaras, herons, flycatchers, and other birds of prey patiently hunting from the treetops. An optional short visit to Cocha Brashco is available, and lunch will be provided en route. From the river, we'll head to a hide deep in the jungle where we'll spend the night. The reason we're going to this hide is because it offers the opportunity to see tapirs at night.
We will depart for Cusco after breakfast, then head towards the port of Atalaya where we will board your transport to the city of Cusco. We will have lunch en route in the cloud forest, and once we arrive in Cusco, we will conclude our expedition at the Plaza de Regocijo, very close to the main Plaza de Armas, at approximately 5:00 PM.
