The Portonaito bog has one of the highest concentrations of plankton in the area, making a night swim a fun and fascinating waste of bioluminescence, which becomes attractive from navigation, marine wildlife activity on the move within its habitat, to a refreshing bright bath.
Bioluminescence is created by an algae of the microscopic plankton of the Dinoflagellate group called ‘noctiluque’. When it is stirred it becomes luminous, depending on the concentration of the water.
