We depart Cusco early in the morning, traveling by private vehicle through beautiful Andean valleys and traditional rural communities. Your first stop is at the pre-Inca Lupaca burial towers, followed by a visit to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, where we explore its small but fascinating museum. We continue driving until reaching the lush Cloud Forest, where we enjoy lunch surrounded by nature. This area is home to unique endemic species, including orchids, bromeliads, ferns, the Andean spectacled bear, and the iconic Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird, famous for its colorful mating display. After observing wildlife along the route, we descend toward the tropical foothills and arrive at Pilcopata Lodge, where we spend your first night.
After an early breakfast, we visit a local coca plantation and a small wildlife rescue center. Then we continue to the port of Atalaya (500 m), on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River. Here we board your motorized boat and begin navigating downstream, observing herons, vultures, cormorants, and other Amazon birdlife along the riverbanks. We reach Amazon Manu Lodge, where a freshly prepared lunch awaits. In the afternoon, we hike through the jungle to Machuwasi Lagoon, and board traditional wooden rafts to look for birds such as the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin, and with luck, caimans, monkeys, and capybaras. Overnight at the lodge.
Early in the morning, we travel by boat to the Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick (Collpa)—a natural clay wall where species like the Blue-headed Parrot, White-eyed Parakeet, and Chestnut-fronted Macaw gather daily to feed on mineral-rich clay that helps them eliminate toxins. After observing this colorful wildlife spectacle, we return to the lodge for breakfast, pack your luggage, and take the boat back to Atalaya. Your vehicle will be waiting for the final journey back to Cusco. We stop en route for lunch and expect to arrive in the city around 6:30 pm. End of services.
