We will leave Cusco early in the morning in one of our private vehicles. As we travel, we will cross beautiful valleys between the Andes Mountains and picturesque rural communities. We will visit pre-Inca tombs of the Lupaca culture and then stop in Paucartambo, a charming colonial town, where we will explore its small but fascinating museum. Lunch will be served in the cloud forest. We continue descending through this lush ecosystem rich in endemic species, including the spectacled bear and the Andean cock-of-the-rock—the national bird of Peru—famous for its unique mating dance. We may also spot orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and more. We will enjoy spectacular natural scenery throughout the journey until we arrive at our lodge, Pilcopata Lodge, where we will spend our first night.
After an early breakfast, we will take a walk to observe forest wildlife such as monkeys and birds. Then, we will visit a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center. Afterwards, we continue to Puerto Atalaya, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River (500 m a.s.l.), where we begin our boat journey. As we travel downstream, we will observe a great variety of birds such as herons, vultures, cormorants, and more, until we reach Amazon Manu Lodge. Here, we can take a refreshing swim in the river and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit a nearby swamp, home to toucans, woodpeckers, macaws, and other species. After dinner, we will head out once more to spot the glowing eyes of caimans in the dark. Overnight at the lodge.
Early in the morning, we take a boat to visit the Macaw Clay Lick, a riverside wall where various parrot species—such as the blue-headed parrot, white-eyed parakeet, and the red-fronted macaw—gather every morning to feed on mineral-rich clay that aids digestion and toxin removal. We will enjoy breakfast back at the lodge. Afterward, we will take a 2.5- to 3-hour hike through the forest, returning for lunch and time to rest or swim in the river. Guests may also choose to enjoy a free zipline experience. In the afternoon, we visit Machuwasi Lake, exploring it on wooden rafts to observe birds like the hoatzin and, with some luck, monkeys or capybaras. After sunset, we take a night walk to observe insects, amphibians, and other nocturnal wildlife. Dinner and overnight at Amazon Manu Lodge.
Optional Free Activity: Canopy Zipline Guests can enjoy an unforgettable Amazon canopy adventure gliding between treetop platforms on high-quality, safe equipment, followed by a 20-meter rappel descent back to the forest floor.
After a delicious breakfast, we will spend some time observing hummingbirds around the lodge before boarding our boat back to Puerto Atalaya. Our private bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. Lunch will be served along the way, and we expect to arrive between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm.
