Our day starts with pickup from your accommodation in Cusco at around 4:30 a.m. Then we drive toward the southern highlands, passing small villages, farmland, valleys, and mountain scenery along the way.
After about two hours, we stop at a local restaurant for breakfast. You will have time to enjoy a warm meal, have some coffee or coca tea, use the restrooms, and get ready for the hike. We then continue to the trailhead near Rainbow Mountain. Before setting off, your guide will explain the route, go over the main safety recommendations, and share practical advice for walking at high altitude.
The hike to Vinicunca usually takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on your pace, the weather, and how you feel at altitude. The first part of the trail is fairly gradual, while the final section becomes steeper. We take our time and stop whenever necessary. Along the route, you will cross wide Andean landscapes and may see local herders, llamas, and alpacas, with views of the Ausangate region in the distance. Your guide will also share information about the area, its people, and the natural features of the route. At the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, you will have time to rest, take photos, and admire the colored slopes of Vinicunca. Your guide will explain how the mineral composition of the soil created the different shades seen across the mountain.
From there, we continue toward Red Valley, an impressive area of deep red hills and open landscapes that feels quieter than the main Rainbow Mountain viewpoint. After visiting Red Valley, we follow the trail back to the starting point, enjoying the surrounding mountain scenery along the way.
We then drive back to the restaurant for lunch. You will have time to relax after the hike and enjoy a freshly prepared meal featuring local Peruvian ingredients.
After lunch, we begin the return journey to Cusco, arriving at around 5:30 p.m.
