Though the Spanish repurposed much of it, what remains is a powerful reminder of Inca engineering. Next, visit Qenko, Tambomachay, and Puca Pucara, each with its own significance, from sacred altars to ceremonial baths and ancient guard posts. In the afternoon, head to Ollantaytambo (2,792 m / 9,160 ft), a town where Inca traditions still thrive. Walk through its cobbled streets, explore its archaeological site, and climb its terraces for breathtaking valley views. Stand before the unfinished Sun Temple, where massive pink granite stones reveal the skill of Inca stonemasons. Finally, board your train to Aguas Calientes, where the anticipation of Machu Picchu grows with every mile.

In the morning, return from Aguas Calientes to OllantaytambO. From here, head into the Andean highlands to visit Moray (11,482 ft), a site of concentric terraces once used as an Inca agricultural laboratory. This amphitheater-like design created microclimates that helped cultivate crops at different altitudes, showcasing Inca knowledge. Next, visit the Maras Salt Mines (11,090 ft), a dazzling network of over 3,000 salt pools carved into the mountainside. Used since pre-Inca times, these terraces are still harvested by local families, forming a shimmering contrast against the rugged landscape. The cascading salt flats under the sun create a stunning sight. The journey ends in Chinchero (12,343 ft), the "birthplace of the rainbow." Explore its colonial church, built on Inca foundations, and visit a textile center where artisans keep ancient weaving traditions alive. Return to Cusco (11,152 ft) to rest.
